Doctors at the Murmansk Regional Clinical Hospital for Children have for the first time used botulinum toxin injections to treat overactive bladder syndrome.
High-tech procedure was performed by Ilya Kagantsov, Head of the Research Laboratory for Surgery of Congenital and Hereditary Diseases, a pediatric urologist, andrologist and pediatric surgeon. He has a wealth of experience in complex cases of surgical treatment of genitourinary diseases and abnormalities in children.
Botulinum toxin surgery is a modern and effective method to treat overactive and neurogenic bladder in children. It avoids more invasive surgical interventions and significantly improves patients' quality of life.
Patients with congenital urinary malformations (hydronephrosis, ureterohydronephrosis) and congenital genital anomalies (various forms of hypospadias) were also operated on. One of these surgeries was unique for the Murmansk region. The doctors helped a six-year-old boy who had previously undergone staged surgery due to a split urethral wall. He had recurrent urinary incontinence.
A total of 8 surgical procedures were performed, 5 of which were minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures.
The purpose of the specialist’s visit was to facilitate an exchange of experience, training and professional development between pediatric surgeons, urologists and andrologists from the surgical department of the Children's Regional Hospital. All surgeries were performed as part of a high-tech medical care programme.
