The results of a multicenter study initiated and coordinated by Almazov Centre will allow changing approaches to catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation by modifying the parameters of pulmonary vein isolation and assessment of periprocedural results.

The study involved 10 medical institutions: 8 clinics in Russia, one clinic in Slovenia and one in Kazakhstan. The number of included patients and the analyzed periprocedural parameters exceeds that in all previous studies in this area. The data obtained allow improving approaches to ablation for more effective treatment and prevention of recurrent arrhythmia.

The results will be published in the Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology.

Dmitry Lebedev, Head of Arrhythmology Research Department, chief visiting arrhythmologist of the Northwestern Federal District, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences highlights: “The work is the result of the collective commitment of Russian and foreign specialists in the interventional treatment of atrial fibrillation, it is a significant contribution to the development of technologies for treatment and prevention of recurrent arrhythmias. We look forward to further internal and international cooperation to implement such ambitious projects.”

Deputy Director of the Institute of Heart and Vessels Dr. Evgeny Mikhailov (Principal Investigator) comments: “This work is a continuation of numerous registry studies coordinated by Almazov Centre in the Russian Federation to provide new information on previously understudied aspects of antiarrhythmic therapy, catheter ablation and long-term management of patients with atrial fibrillation.  What makes this work special is the huge amount of data and their unprecedented integrity, which made it possible to gain fundamentally new results. Due to the involvement of numerous catheter ablation specialists and a variety of applied approaches, we managed to develop a “formula” for the optimal ablation procedure yielding the best results.”

The responsible coordinator of the study and the first author of the publication is Nigar Gasimova, PhD student of the Centre, cardiologist, recipient of the Presidential Grant for young scientists. New data on prospective follow-up of enrolled patients are coming in the near future.

The obtained results have been summed up in the article: Gasimova NZ, Nechepurenko AA, Kropotkin EB, Ivanitsky EA, Kolunin GV, Shavshin DA, Antolic B, Artyukhina EA, Abdrakhmanov AS, Korolev KS, Lebedev DS, Mikhaylov EN.
