The Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics and Genetics aims to train professionals in the field of laboratory medicine able to implement the introduction of new biomedical technologies and scientific advances into clinical practice. During the training the Department supports concept of interdisciplinary interaction and helps to train clinical laboratory diagnostics doctors and laboratory genetic specialists.

Specializations and areas of training:

Specialists are trained in three specialties: clinical laboratory diagnostics, laboratory genetics and genetics — internship, clinical residency, postgraduate training program, certification and thematic improvement cycles (thematic advanced training).
Advanced training cycles are made within the main laboratory diagnostic areas: laboratory studies in pathology of blood system, high tech laboratory technologies, selected issues of clinical biochemistry and laboratory immunology, cytogenetic laboratory tests basics. Training at thematic improvement cycles is made close to the problems of translational medicine of cardiovascular system diseases, pathology of the hemostatic system, and hematological diseases.

The cycles of retraining and improvement are made not only for doctors, but also for specialists with biological education.
The base of the training is the scientific and clinical association “Laboratory Medicine”, which includes the Department of clinical laboratory diagnostics and genetics, research laboratory of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics and clinical diagnostic labs of Federal Almazov Medical Research Centre. The Department has 3 doctors of medical and biological sciences, 1 PhD and 1 candidate of biological sciences; it actively involves doctors of Diagnostic laboratories in its work.

The Department pays particular attention to the training laboratory quality, modern information software (Laboratory Information System), principles of automation, legal framework and the organization of the laboratory.

The acquired knowledge enables young professionals to join the work of diagnostic laboratory immediately after graduation without a long period of adaptation, and the doctors and biologists with experience — to gain new knowledge and optimize lab activities at all stages — from the samples to results, processing and storage of laboratory data.

Practical training

Practical training in internship and clinical internship gives the opportunity to obtain skills in multifunctional laboratory based on 3 divisions — Central clinical diagnostic laboratory of Federal Almazov Medical Research Centre, laboratory of Medical — Rehabilitation complex and laboratory of Perinatal Centre. During training we study the use of the most advanced technologies, analytical systems incorporating automatic analyzers for hematologic, coagulation studies, immunochemical assays, flow cytometry, as well as express analyzers.

Practical training is carried out by experienced doctors with years of experience on the equipment of the leading manufacturers of medical laboratory technology “Abbot”, “Roche”, “Beckman Coulter”, Diagast” and many others. The training program includes development of molecular genetics and cytogenetic studies methods, polymerase chain reaction and sequencing.

The Laboratory of Perinatal Centre provides a unique opportunity to study the characteristics of laboratory diagnosis in pediatric patients, newborns and pregnant women, the skills of research on the latest immuno analyzer “Qwalis” and using gel technologies.

Laboratory of Medical Rehabilitation complex purposefully provides training in the diagnosis of endocrine diseases and the development of algorithms for the management of patients during rehabilitation. Work in the microbiology laboratory trains to conduct a comprehensive diagnosis of infectious processes using advanced technologies: research of any pathological material with accurate species identification abjection and determining their sensitivity to a wide range of antimicrobial agents. Duty in express — laboratory helps to understand the urgent conditions and master the methods of bedside diagnosis.

Scientific activities

The Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics and Genetics as a part of scientific and clinical association “Laboratory Medicine” is actively involved in scientific work of Federal Almazov Medical Research Centre. The Department conducts laboratory studies on 13 research programs and themes on epidemiology, cardiology, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, and hematology. The research priority of the Department is studying the molecular mechanisms of thrombotic events, early diagnosis and monitoring of prethrombotic antithrombotic therapy. The Department has postgraduate study program in Clinical laboratory diagnostics with dissertations preparation on medical and biological sciences.
