Key achievements


Currently, development of the techniques for targeted drug delivery into damaged tissues with nanoparticulate carriers is one of the most promising fields of modern pharmacology. This approach has several advantages: targeted therapeutic effects on focal pathological processes (tumor growth, inflammation, and ischemia), reduction of toxicity and side effects of the drugs, enhancement of solubility and stability of the drugs, improvement of biocompatibility, and controlled release of the drugs.

Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide and will remain the same by the year 2020, according to prognosis. Therefore, reduction of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury is one of the biggest challenges for modern medicine. An approach to problem solving is based on targeted delivery of the cardioprotective drugs (angiogenic growth factors, recombinant erythropoietin, ATP-sensitive potassium channel activators, etc.) with covalent and/or non-covalent bonds with nanocarriers into myocardium. We suggest that local accumulation of the drug-carrying nanoparticles in the heart tissues with a reversible ischemia/reperfusion injury may be achieved by selective binding of annexin V on surface of the nanoparticles.

In 2012, the research team of the Laboratory have received a Patent for Invention of the Russian Federation “Cardioprotection Technique” and a Patent Application “Carrier for Drugs and Biologically Active Substances for the Treatment and Diagnosis, and the Method for its Preparation”.

In addition, we have developed the computer appliance for monitoring and analysis of hemodynamic parameters during the experiment. The appliance is accepted to practice in the Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University, Federal Almazov Medical Research Centre, Institute of Experimental Medicine of the North-West Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, and Joint-stock Company “Saint-Petersburg Institute of Pharmacy” and used in basic, applied, and preclinical studies of the new drugs.

Researchers of the Laboratory of Nanotechnology are involved in the Competition for the Best Innovative Projects in Science and Higher Professional Education of St. Petersburg for several years.
