Almazov National Medical Research Centre is the leading institution in the North-West region of the Russian Federation with unique material and technical base and wide range of medical care.
The training of cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons began almost since the first years of the Research Institute of Cardiology. However, in the early 80s the number of students was about 5 clinical residents in «Cardiology» and «Cardiovascular Surgery» per year, in recent years more than 250 specialists in more than 25 specializations have been trained, up to 1,5thousand students in all fields.
Since 2013, Almazov National Centre has a medical education institute, which includes 15 chairs. The chairs have highly professional teaching staff as well as scientists and medical personnel of the Center taking part in educational activities. Every year more than 1500 medical professionals are trained in programs of higher postgraduate and additional professional education. Also, the practical and bedside work is organized for students of medical and technical institutes.

In 2012, Almazov Centre got the State accreditation for educational programs for post-graduate professional education (residency and postgraduate study).
The Institute of Medical Education constantly holds seminars, scientific and practical conferences, schools, symposiums, courses, and field trainingcycles. The Center participates in the continuous medical education program: it develops specialization modules from 18 to 72 hours, distance education, author’s cycles.
Based on the Almazov Center there is a branch of the Central Attestation Commission of the North-West Federal Region assessing the qualifications of medical personnel of many federal institutions.
Simulation Training Centre
One of the main educational goals is the creation of Simulation Training Centre, its main function is to solve the problem of professional training in manual skills that will help to provide better medical care for children, including newborns with extreme and very low birth weight, save their lives and prevent disability.
The key advantages of our Simulation Training Centre is that a simulation training system and real operating rooms, wards, delivery rooms and lecture halls are located in one place. There are few such universal centers in the world: 25 simulators are located in 5 classrooms (381.47 sq.m.), they include the following devices: a mother and a newborn simulator, computerized newborn simulators, full-term and preterm newborns, electronic man-simulator of adults for medical resuscitation, etc.
Almazov Centre’s scientific library is rapidly developing and collaborates with numerous foreign publishers and companies promoting electronic resources and other medical institutions in Saint- Petersburg.
Now the Library of the Center has acquired the reputation of a modern multifunctional information center for medicine. More than 3,500 readers visit the library each year. Federal Almazov Centre conducts training seminars and lectures on information resources there; the Library has a subscription to many scientific journals in the main areas of the Center’s areas of interest.
The Sector carries out huge and intensive research work in the field of the history of cardiology, its results are published in journals and newspapers of the Russian Federation.
The collection of the Museum now has more than 500 attributed storageitems, many themwere used to create the exposition, and about 1000 units are from the auxiliary fund. Now it is not just a museum — it is a functional museum spaceintroducing the Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Centre as a modern scientific center. The exhibition is made in the form of photo-lithography and tells about scientific, public and teaching activity of the founder of the Centre Academician Vladimir Almazov.
