On November 14–15, Almazov Centre hosted the 8th Interdisciplinary Conference on Rare and Unknown Diseases, themed “Orphan Diseases: Diagnosis, Treatment, Rehabilitation”.

The event was held as part of the programme of the World-Class Research Centre for Personalized Medicine.

The conference programme addressed the topical issues in the diagnosis and treatment of children with orphan and understudied diseases. This multidisciplinary event, involving many specialists from different fields, aimed to enhance the proficiency of Russian medical specialists engaged in the care of patients with rare and understudied diseases and equip them with scientific expertise and practical competencies in the following areas: prenatal and neonatal screening, hereditary diseases, novel technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of orphan and genetic diseases, and rehabilitation.

The Conference programme included plenary and breakout sessions, interdisciplinary exchange sessions, discussion round tables, masterclasses and satellite symposia.

Topics covered:
• Innovative technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of rare and understudied diseases
• Early diagnosis of orphan and understudied diseases in children / genetic family counselling / advanced newborn screening
• Possibilities of habilitation and rehabilitation in orphan diseases
• Role of telemedicine centres in the provision of diagnostic, counselling and therapeutic support to regional patients with rare diseases
• Successive and multidisciplinary management of patients with rare diseases

The conference focused on the modern methods and techniques of diagnostic radiology and medical imaging in perinatology and pediatrics. Attendees learned about current algorithms for diagnosing different diseases for further implementation in practice.

The conference covered the following topics:
• Multimodal and multidisciplinary approach to radiation safety
• Topical issues of prenatal ultrasound and MRI for congenital fetal anomalies
• Topical issues of neuroimaging and cardiothoracic imaging in children
• Topical issues of trauma and orthopedics for pediatric radiologists

On October 11–12, Almazov Centre hosted the Professor Zaritskey Discussion Club, themed “Myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms – implications for personalized medicine”. The event was held as part of the programme of the WCRC for Personalized Medicine. It was organized by the Institute of Oncology and Hematology, building on the valuable work initiated by Professor Andrey Zaritskey to develop and implement effective treatments for hematological malignancies.

The conference addressed the challenges of diagnosing and treating patients with acute myeloid and lymphocytic leukemia, chronic lymphoproliferative disorders, and chronic Ph-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms.

The event featured presentations on the following topics:
• Acute myeloid and lymphocytic leukemia – risk-adapted therapy, including allo-HSCT
• Chronic lymphoproliferative disorders — the role of new therapies in patient management
• Chronic myeloproliferative disorders— optimization of targeted therapy, the role of molecular methods for diagnosing and predicting treatment outcomes

From October 9th to 11th, Almazov Centre hosted the XII Saint Petersburg School of Arrhythmology 2024, themed “Arrhythmology: a multidisciplinary approach”.
The event was held as part of the programme of the WCRC for Personalized Medicine with support from the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The event aimed:
— To enhance diagnostic and treatment standards for the management of patients with heart rhythm disorders.
— To facilitate the introduction of advanced technologies for diagnostics, medication, surgical and interventional treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with heart rhythm disorders.
— To provide training for cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, physicians and functional diagnosticians in modern diagnostic methods, and in the most recent developments in the non-surgical and interventional approaches to the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and conduction disorders, as well as in the prevention of complications.

Discussions were centred around the topical issues of modern arrhythmology, including various aspects of diagnosis, non-surgical and interventional approaches to the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and conduction disorders. Plenary and breakout sessions, symposia, workshops and round tables focused on the main topics of arrhythmology. The event included live broadcasts from operating theatres and hands-on training on simulators.

This year’s programme focused on a multidisciplinary approach to cardiac rhythm disorders and included symposia on the following topics:
— arrhythmias and coronary artery disease
— arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies
— arrhythmias and congenital heart defects
— arrhythmias and genetic disorders

There were separate sessions and practical masterclasses for nurses, with a focus on teamwork in the electrophysiology operating room and the management of patients with arrhythmias in the outpatient and inpatient settings.

The Russian Live Neuroradiology Conference, entitled “Devil Hidden in Details 2024”, which took place on 26-27 September, was an international event organized by the Saint Petersburg Association of Neurosurgeons, Polenov Neurosurgical Institute (branch of Almazov National Medical Research Centre) and Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. It provided a platform for healthcare professionals to exchange scientific information and demonstrate the latest advances in modern treatment methods and clinical research.
The conference had the following educational objectives:
— Application of important clinical research results and evidence-based medicine for treating patients with cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and arteriovenous fistulas.
— Implementation of new interventional technologies and methods for treating patients with complex cerebrovascular diseases.
— Integration of advancements in diagnostic assessment and therapy for patients with carotid, vertebral, and intracranial artery diseases.
— Adoption of appropriate pharmacological approaches for treating patients undergoing diagnostic angiography and surgical treatment before, during, and after catheterization.
— Enhancing the safety of the workflow in the angiography room, sharing knowledge between doctors, technicians, and nurses.

The conference featured:
• presentations,
• live broadcasts of surgeries from the RG-operating rooms of the Polenov Neurosurgical Institute and partner clinics to the conference hall,
• live case discussions and real-time patient treatment scenarios.

The residents of the Department of Neurosurgery learned about the advancements in modern treatment modalities and clinical research.

On September 18, Almazov Centre hosted the scientific and practical conference with international participation Professor Zaritskey Discussion Club, themed “Chronic myeloid leukemia – standards and innovations in patient management”.

The conference focused on the problems of diagnosis and therapy of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia. The invited experts discussed challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of patients at different stages of chronic myeloid leukemia.

The conference brought together hematologists, morphologists, specialists in molecular genetic testing, clinical residents and researchers.

The event was held in hybrid format. It was held as part of the programme of the WCRC for Personalized Medicine and supported by the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The conference covered the following topics:
• New technologies in the assessment of CML treatment outcomes
• Chronic myeloid leukemia in real clinical practice
• Optimization of treatment approaches for chronic phase CML
• Current practice and prospects for CML management

Among the honorary chairs of the Scientific and Organizing Committee were Rüdiger Helmann, founder and chairman of the European LeukemiaNet (ELN), Evgeny Shlyakhto, Director General of Almazov Centre, and Alexandra Konradi, Deputy Director General for Research.

From June 9th to 11th, the V St. Petersburg Forum of Arrhythmology took place in Saint Petersburg. The event was organized by the Russian Society of Cardiology, Russian Society of Arrhythmology and Almazov National Medical Research Centre and was held as part of the programme of the World-Class Research Centre for Personalized Medicine.

The St. Petersburg Forum of Arrhythmology is a significant event in the scientific world. Arrhythmology is a modern, rapidly developing field of medicine that combines clinical traditions, basic research and new technologies. The Forum’s extensive programme included a comprehensive range of topics at the forefront of modern science, such as clinical and interventional arrhythmology, pediatric, sports and geriatric arrhythmology, the molecular and structural basis of arrhythmias, methods of imaging and functional testing in arrhythmology, approaches to prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases directly related to arrhythmias. The event was undoubtedly enhanced by the comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals of heart rhythm disorders, including basic and experimental arrhythmology, as well as mathematical modelling in electrophysiology, presented by leading scientists from around the globe.

The first day of the event was a special one, as it was dedicated to commemorating the legacy of Professor Dmitry Egorov – the esteemed founder of the Leningrad scientific school of arrhythmia surgery and cardiac pacing. There was also a dedicated session in honour of the brightest personalities in Russian arrhythmology. Additionally, on the first day, a series of symposia were held on the fundamental basis of heart rhythm disorders, a traditional highlight of the St. Petersburg Arrhythmology Forum. Leading scientists from the USA, Germany, China, New Zealand, the Netherlands and other countries delivered presentations. Also on the first day, the always popular session on Teamwork in the Inpatient and Outpatient Settings was held for nurses and physicians of related specialties.

The official opening of the Forum took place on the second day. The Forum was traditionally opened by Evgeny Shlyakhto, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, President of the Russian Society of Cardiology, and Director General of Almazov Centre. He highlighted the significant social impact of heart rhythm disorders in the Russian Federation, emphasizing the associated risks of morbidity, mortality, and a significant economic burden on the state.

The distinguished guests included Academician of RAS Amiran Revishvili, Academician of RAS Elena Golukhova, Academician of RAS Sergey Popov, and Professor Yang Yao, Chief Arrhythmologist of China. The Forum opening was welcomed by Oleg Ergashev, Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg. He noted that the Forum is an important event for the city, which is a Russian health resort and a major centre for medical personnel training, as well as the largest scientific and methodological medical centre, and is crucial for the its continued development and attracting guests. In the plenary session, the key issues and directions of strategic development of modern arrhythmology in Russia and the world were highlighted by the guests of honour.

The Forum discussed a number of important issues related to modern arrhythmology, including the fundamentals, various aspects of diagnostics, drug and interventional approaches to the treatment of cardiac rhythm and conduction disorders. In addition, a number of thematic sessions were held for nurses, a session for anaesthesiologists, a symposium on the development of arrhythmology care in new regions and others. The Forum provided a discussion platform for free speeches on scientific and practical topics. A total of 94 scientific symposia were held, with 26 symposia sponsored by manufacturing and pharmaceutical companies, 387 speakers delivered 443 presentations.

The Forum also featured an exhibition showcasing the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies for cardiac arrhythmias, as well as medications.

A Young Scientist Award was also announced as part of the Forum. The winners (Vyacheslav Korepanov, Alexandra Mamarina and Roman Ushakov) were presented with prizes, including trips to the XI Russian Congress of Arrhythmology in Krasnoyarsk in 2025, a trip to the XII St. Petersburg School of Arrhythmology in October 2024, and a training course at the Academy of Arrhythmology of Almazov Centre.

The Forum brought together more than 2,000 participants, both onsite and online.

The next 6th edition of St. Petersburg Forum of Arrhythmology is scheduled for 11–13 June 2026.
