III Clinical Laboratory Forum – The Clinical Face of Laboratory Medicine

The Forum focused on the development of clinical guidelines, the search for an effective interdisciplinary dialogue between laboratory services and doctors as well as the scientific and organizational aspects of COVID-19. Interdisciplinary interaction allows for laboratory and clinical diagnosis based on objective information about the state of the human body obtained through studies of the composition and properties of human biological materials.

The event also featured an open meeting of the Ministerial Commission on Clinical Laboratory Testing and a virtual exhibition of medical equipment and consumables for a modern laboratory.

Polenov Neurosurgical Institute present their results at the 7th EAN Congress

The 7th Congress of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) with the overarching theme Time for Action encompassed the topical issues of neurology and related specialties with a particular focus on the neurological problems of diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 complications.

Specialists of Polenov Neurosurgical Institute presented 16 posters and oral presentations. The presentations highlighted the innovative aspects of pathomorphological studies in drug-resistant epilepsy.

The Congress presentations were devoted to the main patterns of neurological symptoms in patients with chronic disorders of consciousness, hormonal disorders in women with chronic disorders of consciousness, the metabolic profile in patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and functional MRI in patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome in a minimally conscious state.

International Conference “Horizons of Modern Angiology, Vascular Surgery and Phlebology”

The event brought together over 1,500 specialists from different regions of Russia as well as from European and CIS countries. The conference featured 400 presentations in 16 sessions encompassing controversial issues of endovascular, open and hybrid interventions for patients with multifocal atherosclerosis.

Specialists of the Vascular Surgery Clinic of Almazov Centre shared their experience. During the “Hybrid surgery” section, the experts proposed to create an All-Russian registry of patients with aortic arch lesions to optimize modern approaches in interventional surgical treatment.

Interaction with colleagues from different countries promotes the development of innovative treatment approaches and contributes to the scientific and practical potential of researchers. Such conferences provide a meeting place to share experiences and are essential for future scientific progress of vascular surgery in Russia.

4th Saint Petersburg Medical Innovation Forum

During three days, the participants discussed the issues of improving cardiology care, topical issues of endocrinology and experimental medicine, drug therapy for cardiovascular disease, challenging issues of oncohematology, neurology and neurosurgery, new medical technologies and medical education innovations, traditional and innovative teaching technologies for medical imaging, modern technologies for women’s health.

The participants discussed the issues of establishing a biomedical R&D ecosystem that will develop and implement diagnostic and treatment technologies based on personalized medicine, including the assessment of genetic risks, methods of pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics, disease biomodelling, genome modification and the creation of drugs for gene therapy and biomedical cell products with the use of genome editing technologies to improve the quality of treatment and reduce mortality in various cardiovascular diseases, metabolic comorbidities, hematological malignancies and certain types of solid tumors, some infectious diseases, as well as in genetic diseases, including rare and understudied ones.

This year’s sessions featured more than 20 key-note lectures and invited lectures by leading world experts in all areas of personalized medicine including epidemiological genetics, rare diseases, microbiota research, oncology, nervous system pathology, cardiovascular diseases, theranostics and more.

Scientific and Practical Seminar on Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders

Traditionally, the event brought together participants from all over Russia as well as Uzbekistan and Armenia: surgeons, endocrinologists, general practitioners, anesthesiologists, psychologists and nutritionists. This year’s event attracted particular interest from the CEOs of clinics.

The seminar focused on bariatric surgery preparation, training for related specialists in the treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome, the relevance of multidisciplinary approach.

Leading bariatric surgeons analyzed the technical aspects of surgical procedures broadcasted from operating rooms for a more detailed study of important issues. Leading endocrinologists, anesthesiologists and psychologists shared their knowledge for a comprehensive immersion in all aspects of bariatric surgery.

9th All-Russian Congress of Arrhythmology — Arrhythmology Without Frontiers: From a Research Lab to Clinical Guidelines

The first day of the Congress featured the awarding ceremony honouring the outstanding contribution to arrhythmology in three nominations: basic research, implementation of treatment and prevention programmes, educational activities in the field of arrhythmology. The award winners in 2021 were: Lyubov Mitrofanova (St. Petersburg), Dmitry Egorov (St. Petersburg), Mikhail Medvedev (St. Petersburg).

The event featured symposia held jointly with foreign societies: ISHNE – International Society for Holter and Noninvasive Electrocardiology, EHRA – European Heart Rhythm Association, European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Myocardial and Pericardial Diseases.

Almazov Youth Medical Forum — 2021

The Forum brought together young scientists, residents and students from all over Russia and from other countries. The event featured daily workshops by renowned medical experts, best research paper, team and individual medical competitions. The results were announced at the plenary session with the award ceremony.

The Forum provided a platform for professional networking and created an atmosphere for informal dialogue between young researchers and novice doctors.

International Symposium the Fetal and Neonatal Heart: Implications for Adult Life

The start of the symposium was given by the Director General, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Evgeny Shlyakhto, President of the Italian Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Professor Gian Carlo Di Renzo, President of the Association of Pediatric Cardiologists of the Russian Federation, Professor I. A. Kovalev, Director of the Institute of Perinatology and Pediatrics of Almazov Centre T.M. Pervunina and the Clinic Director, Professor E.V. Komlichenko.

RAS Corresponding member R. R. Movsesyan, Professor E. V. Grekhov and Dr. I. A. Kozyrev introduced the new horizons of neonatal cardiac surgery and ways to solving existing problems.

Professor Greggory DeVore (one of the developers of the famous Tomtec @ program for intrauterine GLS counting and possible forecasting) showed the wide range of speckle tracking capabilities.

Professor Katarina Hanseus, President of the European Association of Pediatric Cardiology, outlined the positive dynamics of survival and long-term results in patients with congenital heart defects.

March 31–April 2
19th All-Russian Scientific-Practical Neurosurgery Conference “Polenov's Readings”

Traditionally, the conference arouses great interest among not only Russian, but also foreign members of the professional community. It brings together neurosurgeons and neurologists, specialists in rehabilitation medicine, clinical pharmacologists, psychiatrists and representatives of biomedical sciences.

The participants also explored the possibilities of neurorehabilitation and neuropsychiatry as well as the issues of molecular neuroscience. Particular attention was focused on the discussions on spinal, vascular and functional neurosurgery, surgery of peripheral nerves.

The conference also featured a master class titled “Neuropathy of the Facial Nerve: From Neurosurgery to Rehabilitation.”

Participants from various specialties actively contributed to the discussion of the issues of neurosurgical and neurological conditions in terms of interdisciplinary interaction, challenging aspects of neurophysiological diagnosis, modern approaches to the rehabilitation care for patients as well as the experience and results in the management of patients with various diagnoses, patient-tailored treatment and preventive measures.

A total of about 1,000 registered participants attended the conference.

4th Annual Conference “High Technologies in Gynecology of Childhood and Early Reproductive Age” (online)

During the event, 327 participants connected from different regions of Russia.

The topics of the first module demonstrated that only a multidisciplinary approach provides effective and quality care for girls with gynecological diseases. The second module of the conference was devoted to a very rarely discussed topic – pediatric urogynecology. The third module was a vivid illustration of the treatment and diagnostic modalities of Almazov Centre.

The Ministry of Health's Head Specialist in Child and Adolescent Gynecology Prof. Elena Uvarova shared an invaluable experience in the treatment of genital defects in girls.

Almazov Centre thanked the audience for their interest and highlighted that the Centre is always open to any forms of corporate communications with colleagues from the regions.

Science Talk “Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. Myths and Reality” online

Science Talk “Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. Myths and Reality” is a joint event of Almazov Centre and Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University (LETI) for schoolchildren of 7-11 years of education and it was timed to the Russian Science Day as the part of the Year of Science and Technology.

The participants could look into the world of scientific research and opportunities of artificial intelligence, fast development in medicine and were acquainted to the current interesting research projects. More than seventy schoolchildren from different cities of Russia linked to the online even and had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss with specialists of various profiles, learn new things and play the intellectual game Quiz.
