The journal Cardiology published the design of the registry of atrial fibrillation ablation with the Ablation Index Module. The registry was organized by the specialists of the Arrhythmology Research Department, and the executive committee of the project includes prominent Russian experts. Currently, apart from Russian clinics, several centres of expertise for atrial fibrillation ablation from European countries have joined the study.
The Ablation Index is a module of the electroanatomical mapping system (used in catheter treatment of atrial fibrillation), allowing for each point of radiofrequency ablation to be standardized; it is aimed at predicting the depth of penetration of RF current into the myocardium.
However, according to preliminary studies, there is a wide variation in the Index values in different clinics and among different operators. The main goal of this project is to determine the optimal range of the Index that can be recommended to improve the results and increase the safety of catheter treatment for atrial fibrillation.
The recruitment of patients was slow due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) from April to August this year. Therefore, the decision was made to extend the inclusion period of atrial fibrillation ablation centres for participation in the project.
The project was supported by Grant from the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
