February 8, 2014 was the fifteenth time Russia celebrated Russian Science Day which was established June 7, 1999 by Decree of the first Russian President Boris Yeltsin. Holiday was established to commemorate the 275th anniversary of the founding of Academy of Sciences in Russia and bring into focus the prominent role of national science in development of state and its society.
Fourteen Russian and Soviet scientists, including doctors were awarded Nobel prizes. The first award in 1904 was given to Academician Pavlov for his work on the physiology of digestion, and then in 1908 went to Mechnikov for his work on immunity.
By Russian Science Day Federal Almazov Medical Research Centre coincided International scientific conference “Translational and personalized medicine. Current approaches to atherosclerosis treatment” which was held on February 7, 2014 with the participation of ex-president of the International Atherosclerosis Society, R3i President, Professor Jean-Charles Fruсhart.
Professor Fruchart made a presentation on results of ACCORD study that establish cardiovascular risk in diabetes.
Director of Almazov Centre, RAS Academician, Professor Evgeny Shlyakhto emphasize the role of translational and personalized medicine in future development of all Russian medical science. This approach is actively practiced in Almazov Centre: results of fundamental medico-biological studies are introduced in clinical work.
Several scientific researchers from Almazov Centre – Elena Baranova, Anna Kostareva, Anton Fedorov, Elena Sergeeva, Alexey Panov, Rostislav Nilk, Alexandra Konradi and Oxana Rotar – gave lectures on prominent topics. According to Professor Fruchart, discussion of different aspects of atherosclerosis was very fruitful. “All presentations were incredibly interesting and important”, — he said.
