A 62-year-old patient with an orbital tumor growing into the skull base presented for surgery at the Neftyanik Medical Facility in Tyumen. By that time, the tumor had already spread to destroy the facial bones and caused exophthalmos (bulging eyes). Doctors feared that it would be difficult for them to save the eye.

Neurosurgeons from Almazov Centre came to help Tyumen doctors: Dmitry Gulyaev, Head of Laboratory of Integrative Neurosurgical Technologies, and Ksenia Voronova, Maxillofacial Surgeon at Department of Neurosurgery No. 5.

Only with their joint efforts the doctors managed to not only completely remove the tumor but also perform a full facial reconstruction. The doctors used the patient's own bone from the cranial vault.

“This is a rare clinical case. But once a doctor has mastered a certain set of technologies, it will be difficult but doable. Most importantly, we can assure a patient that with our knowledge, skills and experience, we can perform the surgery with a guarantee. Then, they realize that they are going to be in good hands,” said Dr. Gulyaev.

Postoperative period was uneventful and the patient is now doing well, so he will be discharged soon.
