Researchers of the Institute of Experimental Medicine, World-Class Research Centre for Personalized Medicine described new types of bacteriophages that can inhibit the development of hospital-acquired infections.
Hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria occur on average in 8% of hospitalized patients. One of the most common pathogens of nosocomial infections are vancomycin-resistant enterococci. Bacteriophages, which are viruses that can specifically destroy bacterial cells, are proposed for the treatment and prevention of enterococcal infections as an alternative to antibiotics. However, due to the variability of the population structure of pathogens the composition of phage mixtures should be constantly revised and new varieties of bacteriophages should be included.
