Polenov Neurosurgical Institute is the oldest institution in Russia and the first scientific and practical neurosurgical institute in the world. It was opened in May 1926 on the initiative of professors Alexei Molotkov and Sergey Fedorov and has a long history of development. Polenov Neurosurgical Institute has been a branch of the Almazov National Medical Research Centre since 2014.

In 2015, Polenov Neurosurgical Institute was ranked among the best clinics of St. Petersburg in neurology and neurosurgery.

Today, its research is mainly focused on the development and enhancement of the existing methods for the diagnosis and treatment of neurosurgical diseases as well as studies of the epidemiology, short-term and long-term outcomes.

Main research areas:

  • Pathoanatomical and pathophysiological developments associated with the fundamental issues in modern neurosurgery.
  • Improving the methods of diagnosing, preventing and treating the complications and consequences of acute central nervous system (CNS) injury.
  • Developing new diagnostic and treatment methods for injuries and diseases of the peripheral nervous system.
  • Improving the diagnostic and treatment methods for stenosis and thrombosis of extra- and intracranial vessels, aneurysms of various sites, fusiform, giant and multiple aneurysms, deep-seated and giant arteriovenous malformations, arterio-sinus fistula.
  • Studying the epidemiology and organization of neurosurgical care, developing new diagnostic and treatment methods for brain tumors.
  • Developing new diagnostic and treatment techniques for neurosurgical diseases in children.
  • Cerebral protection and restoration of its functions in neurosurgical patients with CNS disease at various stages of treatment.
  • Studying the neurophysiological and pathogenetic mechanisms and improving the diagnostic system and functional neurosurgery for drug-resistant forms of focal, multifocal and generalized epilepsy in adults and children.
