Polenov Neurosurgical Institute is the oldest institution in the country and the first scientific and practical neurosurgical institute in the world. It was opened in May 1926 on the initiative of professors Alexei Molotkov and Sergey Fedorov and has a long history of development. Polenov Neurosurgical Institute has been a branch of the Almazov National Medical Research Centre since 2014.

In 2015, Polenov Neurosurgical Institute was ranked among the best clinics of St. Petersburg in neurology and neurosurgery.

The major areas of research are the development and enhancement of the existing methods for the diagnosis and treatment of neurosurgical diseases as well as studies of the epidemiology, short-term and long-term outcomes.

The Institute has very well equipped operating rooms with facilities for complex surgeries. There are 15 departments. A comprehensive diagnostic and treatment process is ensured by a multidisciplinary team of highly qualified specialists including not only neurosurgeons but also neurologists, intensive care specialists, diagnostic radiologists, internists, pediatricians, neuro-ophthalmologists and many others. The Institute has laboratories of electrophysiology, biochemistry, cerebral blood flow and other specialized laboratories.
