The Research Department for Vascular and Interventional Surgery is part of the Heart and Vessels Institute of Almazov Centre.

The Department comprises

  • Interventional Surgery Research Laboratory
  • Vascular and Hybrid Surgery Research Laboratory

Major tasks

  • Development and improvement of diagnostic and treatment methods for patients with heart and vascular diseases
  • Introduction into practice of modern medical technologies for better quality of patient care
  • Training of clinical residents and doctors in modern treatments for cardiovascular diseases

Major clinical areas

  • Open, endovascular and hybrid technologies for the treatment of diseases of the aorta and its branches (including minimally invasive techniques to treat aortic aneurysms of different localization, aortic dissection), coronary arteries, peripheral arteries
  • Endovascular aortic valve replacement
  • Endovascular treatment of patients with acute and chronic pulmonary thromboembolism, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension
  • Minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins of the lower extremities

Ongoing research

  • Developing new devices and conducting clinical trials of bare-metal and drug-eluting stents for the treatment of aortic disease
  • Developing domestic coils for peripheral embolization and closure of patent ductus arteriosus in children
  • Developing domestic peripheral hydrophilic guide wires for endovascular interventions on the main arteries
  • Developing and putting into practice the new endovascular methods for the treatment of acute and chronic pulmonary embolism, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension
  • Studying a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of patients with diabetic foot syndrome
  • Implementing and studying the effectiveness of hybrid surgery in patients with multilevel lesions of the brachiocephalic arteries and lower limb arteries
  • Developing and studying the results of endovascular interventions in the treatment of patients with severe chronic venous insufficiency
  • Developing and studying the methods for lumbar artery embolization before endovascular repair of aneurysms and thoracoabdominal aortic dissections in order to reduce the risk of spinal strokes and paralysis during and after surgery
  • Studying and putting into practice da Vinci robot-assisted techniques for abdominal aortic repair

Training and education

As part of educational activities and under the supervision of Dr. Mikhail Chernyavsky, clinical residents and PhD students are trained in the specialties of cardiovascular surgery and endovascular diagnostic and treatment methods.

The specialists of the Department deliver the following advanced training courses:

  • Advanced training course “X-ray Endovascular Treatment Methods for Lower Extremity Arterial Disease” (18 hours)
  • Advanced training course “Endovascular Surgery for Aortic Aneurysms” (18 hours)
  • Advanced training course “Endovascular Methods for Revascularization of the Brachiocephalic Arteries” (prepared for approval)
  • Advanced training course “Hybrid Surgery for Multilevel Lesions of Lower-Limb Arteries” (prepared for approval)
  • A series of skill enhancement manipulation courses for cardiovascular and endovascular beginner surgeons at the Institute of Experimental Medicine (prepared for approval)

The specialists of the Department are active participants of Russian and foreign conferences and workshops; they regularly receive trainings in leading world clinics.
